We actually visited Fort Randall in Pickstown,SD while we at campsite in Salem,SD. on the 15 July.
Fort Randall was established in 1856 to keep peace on the frontier and near the site of the present Fort Randall Dam . It was one of a chain of forts for operations against the Sioux. It operated for 36 years closing in 1892.
There are no remains except for the Chapel which has undergone some reconstruction. The rectangle path around the site does have many reader boards explaining the different buildings that once existed.
The post chapel was built in 1875 by volunteers and it housed also a library and lodge. It was the last building at the fort.
The post cemetery at one time 158 graves and was abandoned in 1892. In 1893 63 Milirary families were reinterred at Fort Leavenworth National Cemetery in Kansas. The remaining graves were local citizens and retired military.There is a marker listing each of the burials and cause of death..mostly from disease.
