Our last day in Pickstown we decided to do a circle tour to look for historic markers passing thru the towns of Wagner,SD and Greewood,SD, Riobrara, NEB, Lindy,NEB and Lynch,NEB.
Our first stop in the town of Greenwood was to view the Yankton Treaty Monument erected to commemorate the treaty between the US and the Yankton Tribe of the Dakota Native Americans. The Treaty was ratified in February 1859 in memory of the Yankton Chiefs who made the treaty in 1858. The Treaty ceded most of eastern South Dakota to the US.
We then drove across the Missouri on the Chief Standing Bear Bridge.
Chief Standing Bear was a Ponca chief born in 1834 After the tribe was relocated to Indian Territory, many died including his son. When he returned his son to their Native land for burial he was arrested. His trial brought much attention to the plight of the Native Americans and he became an advocate for Native American rights.
We then drove to Lindy to view a Lewis & Clark marker for one of their encampments.
Continuing on Hwy 12 we spotted a marker in the town of Lynch,Neb depicting their encounter with prairie dogs.
Tomorrow we depart for Onawa,IA for 2 weeks.
