Our drive took us 300 miles rt to Chadron NE to visit the Fur Trade Museum and then to Crawford NE to visit Ft Robinson. I will write separate blog on Ft Robinson. Our route was east on IH 90 to Rapid City and south on 79 to Chadron.

The Museum has the largest and most complete collection of Northwest Guns made for the Indian Trade. Other exhibits feature costumes, beads, paints,kettles,knives and silver. The outside exhibit include the trading house and warehouse built on Bordeaux Creek in 1849 operating it for the Sioux until 1872. The post was closed in 1876 by the soldiers for selling ammunition to the Native Americans. The trademark on the guns was a fox-in-circle on the lock and barrel to prove to the Indian customer the firearm was of good quality.

In the museum is an exhibit to the Voyageurs who moved the fur trade across the continent.
On the grounds of the trading post as many as 2,000 Sioux camped with herds of 5,000 horses. In an average winter the Post took in around 1,000 tanned buffalo robes sold in the East for robes, coats and bed covers. A buffalo robe sold for $3 to the traders. I did not go to the outside exhibit due to sign on door warning of Rattlesnakes, so used John's photo. Of course, he did not see any.

Our next stop was Ft Robinson in Crawford..20 miles to the east on Hwy 20.
