A nice drive today to Copper Harbor the most northern part of Michigan in the Upper Peninsula located on Lake Superior in the Keweenaw Peninsula. We are staying for the next three nights at Fort Wilkins SP on Lake Fanny Hooe. Very nice campground except nowhere in Copper Harbor is there cell service. There is internet by the bath house. In order to get cell service you have to drive up to Brockway Mountain. It is a very scenic area and the gateway to Isle Royale with daily ferry service. The Spring brings crashing waterfalls, migratory bird flyway, rock hounding for agates and scuba diving. In the fall you can view thousands of acres of fall colors from atop Brockway Mountain.Summer brings mountain biking, hiking the many trails,fishing,camping and kayaking.
Winter over 230 miles of snowmobiling trails, cross country skiing,ice fishing and snowboarding. There are around 80 residents who remain during the winter.
After checking in to our site, we toured Fort Wilkins adjacent to the campground.

Fort Wilkins was constructed in 1844 to keep peace in Michigan's Copper Canyon. It was abandoned in 1846 and regarrisoned in the late 1860's. Nineteen buildings survive. The WPA did extensive restoration on the fort in the 1930's. The fort served as a buffer between prospectors and Indians and to enforce the federal authority in land claims. It was the northernmost post in a chain of forts that stretched from Keweenaw Point to the Gulf of Mexico.It was abandoned in 1870. The abandoned fort became a popular spot for locals and outings on Lake Superior. It became a state park in 1923.
