On to Buffalo,WY

A short drive of 100 miles from Garryowen to Buffalo and the Deer Park RV for 5 nights. A nice park with trees, wild turkeys and a few deer. We are in site 52 which affords satellite.

Buffalo sits at the crossroads of IH25 and IH90 east of the Big Horn Mountains and ski areas. It appears to be a pleasant town with a population of around 4500. Be sure and stop by DJ's grocery if in need of supplies. Browse main street and the shops and Occidental Hotel.

Today we drove to Kaycee..a short drive south on IH 90 for the purpose of visiting the Fort Reno site which is 15 miles east on Hwy 192 to Lower Sussex graded road. Only a monument and signage along the road exists today.

Fort  Reno was established in 1865-1868 and constructed as a supply depot during the Powder River Expeditions and abandoned in 1868 as a result of the Laramie Treaty.It was situated on a high bank above the Powder River. The original fort surrounded by a stockade consisting of 2 barracks,2 officer's quarters, hospital,shops,2 sutler's buildings and teamsters quarters. From here we drove back to Kaycee in order to visit the Dull Knife Battlefield located off Hwy 190 in the area of Barnum. Unfortunately we were unable to locate any signage and headed back to the RV park. When we got back after research learned that we were close, but due to the fact that it is located on private ranch land, we could not have access. In order to tour the area you have to arrange a tour through the ranch, Red Fork, at a cost of $90/ea. This includes lunch and conducted tour. 

The US 4th Cavalry raided and destroyed a winter encampment of the Cheyenne on 25 Nov 1876.The chief at this time was Dull Knife who led his people along with Crazy Horse and Sitting Bull at Little Big Horn. The raid by Gen Mackenzie was revenge for the loss at Little Big Horn. This was the last great frontier battle and Dull Knife's fight for freedom. It is said that visitors can still find spent rifle shells.

Driving into Barnum are some magnificent Red Cliffs.
