Driving into Edmonton we noticed a lot of haze and learned it was from the forest fires north and west of here. Could barely see the city, so will wait until a clearer day to venture into. Edmonton is the capitol of Alberta and located on the Saskatchewan River. Will write more later about the history.
Our first stop today was Fort Edmonton Park that takes you on a journey through time beginning with the Fort in 1846 and continuing through 1920. The park also features a midway and nature center. From the entrance you can take a train to the fort and then wind your way back visiting the era towns. www.fortedmontonpark.ca
The reconstructed fort dates back to 1795 and was a HBC post. It was relocated in 1801 and 1812 and a final fifth time in 1831. The provincial capitol was built in 1912 on the actual site of the last fort. The HBC continued to occupy until 1915.

We then proceeded to walk the 1885,1905 and 1920 streets featuring many of the original houses and business relocated here. There is good signage explaining the history of each of the buildings. There are also several food stops along the way. We brought a picnic lunch. The park is the largest living history museum in Canada by area. Costumed interpreters await your questions. It is interesting to see how Edmonton grew from a small HBC post to a farming community to settlements in the 1920's.

We made a brief stop at Bath and Body Works for a supply of Eucalyptus & Spearmint Body Cream. We avow that this is the best,non toxic mosquito determent. It was on sale 2 for 1 so got 4 tubes.
We then drove East 20 miles to Fort Saskatchewan off Hwy 15. The reconstructed fort consisting of 8 buildings was originally built in 1875 as a North West Mounted Police post. Also located on the grounds is a museum and pioneer village. A flock of sheep being herded by 2 sheep dogs caught my eye. Guess they do a good job of keeping the grass mowed. We had a guide to take us through the fort who was very knowledgeable.
