Today with optimism on the weather, we toured the New Bern Battlefield with plans to go into New Bern for more touring.
When we arrived at the Battlefield saw that today they were having a reenactment of the Battle of New Bern that took place 13 March 1862. On this day a joint force of ground and naval Union troops consisting of some 12,000 made an amphibious assault on the Neuse River adjacent to present day Cherry Point MCAS. The objective was to capture New Bern due to its strategic location as the Atlantic and North Carolina railroads passed through here transporting men and provisions to the Confederates effort in Virginia.
Awaiting the Union forces were 4500 Confederate troops who were inexperienced and not equipped. The battle raged for 6 hours . The Union forces waged a major victory and New Bern was occupied for the remainder of the war.
The New Bern Battlefield Park is owned and operated by the New Bern Historical Society.
