Capilano Suspension Bridge

Since rain is approaching, we decided this would be a great day for the Capilano Suspension Bridge visit. This is one of the most visited spots in Vancouver. Sure would have hated to miss this. For those who haven't experienced this adventure, put it on your list when in the area.

Our first adventure in the park after passing Totem Park display, created by First Nations artists over the past 90 years, was to do the Cliffwalk which is the newest of activities opened in 2011. This walking journey takes you through rainforest vegetation on a series of walkways jutting out from the granite cliffs above the Capilano River. On the walk is a half circle affording more majestic views of the forest and river.

We then crossed over the Suspension Bridge built in 1884, 450 ft long and 230 ft above the Capilano River. The original bridge was built of hemp ropes and cedar planks and replaced with a wire cable bridge in 1903. The bridge was completely rebuilt in 1956. Must admit that going over I held on with both hands and walked sideways. Coming back I felt more secure and only held on with one hand. You are afforded awesome views below. Once we reached the other side, we did the Treetops walk and Nature Walk.

Treetops is the first venue of its kind in North America and built in 2004. It is a series of 7 suspension bridges attached to eight 30 ton, 250 year old Douglas firs taking you 110 feet above the forest floor. It is a tree collar system that is adjustable and has no nails or bolts penetrating the firs. As the trees grow, the collars are moved upward.

Entertainment at Trading Post

Located in the park are restaurant,cafe, trading post and venue for events. Admission is $33.95CAD for seniors and well worth the price. We ate at the park cafe before driving up the road to Grouse Mountain for the Skyride to top. Price for this was $44CAD for seniors. Felt this was too much and would not do again. It affords views of Vancouver. There is a gift shop and restaurant at Alpine level. From here you can take a chairlift to peak.
